Some places naturally draw you closer together. Montagu is one of them. Just over 2 hours from Cape Town, this small Western Cape village is known for its mountain scenery, vineyards, and sense of calm. It’s not busy or hurried. Instead, it invites couples to move at their own pace — to walk, talk, explore, and simply be together.
People We Love: Sam Reinders | Wedding Photographer
Every so often, you meet someone whose presence feels steady. Observant. Kind. The sort of person you instinctively trust with meaningful moments.
Sam Reinders is one of those people.
Sam is a documentary photographer and journalist of nearly two decades. Her work has taken her all over the world and into the lives of extraordinary people — from the powerful and well-known to the quietly powerful, the people we recognise in ourselves. She has photographed in bedazzling places (though she remains endlessly besotted with her own backyard), witnessing a wide spectrum of human experience — not all of it pretty, much of it profoundly moving.
What that work has taught her — especially in the strange and uncertain times we’re living in — is that human connection, kindness, and love are what ultimately matter most.
It’s perhaps why weddings sit so naturally in her world.
Her approach is documentary at its core: attentive, unobtrusive, rooted in storytelling rather than performance. She’s drawn to real moments — fleeting glances, quiet exchanges, the emotional undercurrent of a day — photographed honestly, with empathy and deep respect for the people in front of her lens.
We’re often asked who we love working alongside, and Sam is always one of the first names that comes to mind.
‘My work has taken me all over the world and into the lives of some extraordinary people: from the powerful and well-known, to the quietly powerful - the people you and I recognise in ourselves. I’ve photographed in bedazzling places (though I remain endlessly besotted with my own backyard), and I’ve seen a wide spectrum of human experience: not all of it pretty, much of it profoundly moving. My documentary work has been trusted by editorial and humanitarian organisations such as National Geographic, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, and The World Food Programme — a responsibility I carry into every wedding I photograph.’ – Sam Reinders
Between her work all over the world, she does do a few carefully selected weddings or intimate gatherings when she is in South Africa – connect with her with your dates, you might be in luck!

Montagu is a place that invites you to slow down. Surrounded by mountains, vineyards, and wide Karoo skies, it offers space to breathe and reconnect. Tucked quietly on the edge of town in this valley are two retreats that share the same landscape and philosophy — STIL and In Abundance.
Montagu is beautiful year-round, but autumn and winter offer something especially memorable. As the seasons shift, the valley softens. Light becomes gentler, mornings quieter, and the pace of life slows even further.
